“The movement today to enforce the false idea—that a man can be or become a woman or vice versa—is deeply troubling.”
Yeah, right. If you’re the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, that is. They’ve issued an open letter which expresses particular concern about trans kids. It’s a rather confused document, which denies the experience of thousands of people who have successfully transitioned.
Children especially are harmed when they are told that they can “change” their sex or, further, given hormones that will affect their development and possibly render them infertile as adults.

A year ago, this utility company advertising poster on a wall in a Berlin U-Bahn station might have been considered “provocative” and pushing a progressive social agenda. Now, it’s showcasing the new normal, as marriage in Germany is no longer defined by gender, and so it follows, neither are families. Fighting bigots for the right to same-sex marriage was about our being able to pitch our wedding reception tent on the enemy’s lawn, and with the law in place…well, now it’s our lawn too. It’s released at a time when President Trump has announced his ban on transgender people serving in the military and trans rights are facing new threats from state legislatures. The National Pride March on Washington now looks set to go ahead, on the weekend already set for Capital Pride (8th – 11th June).
It was a spur of the moment idea – and a good one – which Brooklyn resident David Bruinooge floated on Facebook while watching the Women’s March. The Capital Pride team have worked with Bruinooge to develop the march plans further. The harassment of the trans* community continues, as reactionary politicians continue to push so-called “bathroom bills”.
So far this year (and we’re only a few weeks into 2017), 8 states – Alabama, Kentucky, Minnesota, Missouri, South Carolina, Texas, Virginia and Washington – have prefiled or introduced legislation that would restrict access to multiuser restrooms, locker rooms, and other sex-segregated facilities on the basis of a definition of sex or gender consistent with sex assigned at birth or “biological sex.” Continue reading “USA: More States To Harass Trans* Community With “Bathroom Bills””
